As we leave Cape Town, we stop one last time to take a look back at Table Mountain from the other side of Table Bay. No road trip is complete without a stop at a traditional 'Padstal', these small farm stalls that line South Africa's back roads offering a variety of homemade delicacies and baked goods. The Cederberg region offers not only spectacular mountains and orange farms but is also home to the Rooibos bush. This herbal drink, native to the mountains of the Cedarberg, has gained an international reputation as a healthy and refreshing alternative to regular tea. In Namaqualand, we experience the desert landscapes for the first time that will accompany us in the coming days. We continue our journey north and after a quick supply stop in Springbok, head to our camp on the banks of the Orange River. If you’re lucky enough to be traveling in the spring months (July to September), you may see the wildflowers that have made this region famous. Although the Orange River is named after the Dutch royal family, it is more recently known by its original name Gariep, which in the indigenous language KhoeKhoe simply means 'river'. The Orange, which begins in the mountains of Lesotho, is the longest river in South Africa and presents a unique contrast to the desert landscapes along its shores. The best way to experience the river is by boat, and this morning we have the opportunity to participate in an optional canoe trip on the river. This morning we wake up early and drive to the edge of the Fish River Canyon. We will have time to watch the morning sun rays falling into the canyon. After stretching our legs on a walk along the canyon's edge, we turn west and drive to Keetmanshoop. The afternoon is spent hiking through the Quiver Tree Forest and Giants Playground - named for the way the massive dolerite boulders are stacked, creating rock formations and a series of mazes. Every overland trip has some long travel days, and today is one of those days as we venture deeper into the Namib Desert. Our target is the dune fields that cover the western part of the desert. Long dusty roads and sparsely populated farmland give us a glimpse into the vastness of rural Namibia. From the grassland in the east to the red dunes in the west, the slowly changing landscapes showcase the many faces of this desert country. Tonight we camp at the gates of the dune fields and fall asleep to the unique calls of the elusive Barking Gecko. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Today we will rise early to drive to Namib-Naukluft National Park. We will enter the park just after sunrise and head to the famous Dune 45. A steady climb up Dune 45 provides us with the perfect vantage point to admire the changing colors of the desert. Once we’re satisfied, we descend this famous dune and enjoy a hearty breakfast before heading in a 4x4 to Sossusvlei, where we will explore the pans of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei on foot. Tonight, we empty the red sand from our shoes and spend the night under the stunning desert stars, knowing we have savored a whole day enjoying the wonders of this rugged land. Our last day in the desert concludes with an educational desert excursion accompanied by a local expert. Reluctantly, we leave the Namib behind and continue driving after a stop to cross the Tropic of Capricorn, heading towards the Atlantic coast. We make our way to the coastal town of Swakopmund, where adventure and a dose of civilization await us. We stop briefly at the lagoon of Walvis Bay, hoping to catch a glimpse of the flamingos feeding in the shallow waters. Upon arrival in Swakopmund, we have the opportunity to book some of the many adventures offered. Tonight we will dine at a local restaurant. Our desert exploration continues with a drive north where the hot desert sand meets the cold waves of the Atlantic. At the resort of Wlotskabaken, we make a photo stop before heading towards the lichen fields, where our guide will show and explain the lichen colonies. Next, we visit the famous seal colony at Cape Cross, known as the largest in the world, where over 200,000 Cape fur seals bask on the coast. The Cape Cross marks the spot where the first European explorer set foot on the Namibian coast in 1486 and was erected in honor of the Portuguese king of the time by explorer Diego Cao. (Please note that the Cape Cross colony may occasionally be inaccessible, so we may not be able to visit the seals). The road then leads away from the coast and towards the Khorixas area. This morning we explore the rock engravings of Twyfelfontein and the petrified forest in the Kunene region with a local guide. This area has been inhabited by the Khoi San for 6000 years. These inhabitants used the site for conducting shamanistic rituals, creating 2500 rock paintings. The site has one of the largest concentrations of rock engravings in Africa. On our way there, we also visit the Petrified Forest, a national monument consisting of petrified prehistoric tree trunks. In prehistoric times, giant tree trunks were washed down a river and deposited in silt, creating this relic. We leave Twyfelfontein towards Etosha National Park. With its huge salt pans, savannahs, and woodlands, Etosha is one of the most beautiful game parks in Africa. Covering 18,000 square kilometers, it is one of the largest parks in southern Africa. Etosha means 'great white area', referring to the large dried-up pan in the center of the park. We will spend the afternoon exploring the park in an overland truck. On our second day in Etosha, we have a full day to continue exploring the park. No day on a safari is like another, and the excitement over a special sighting is the motivation that keeps our eyes wide open. We will be separated from our overland truck for the next two nights, so it’s important that you pack/assemble your personal items that you may need before we leave Maun. Savuti Game Reserve is a unique area bordering the Okavango Delta to the west and the Chobe National Park to the east. Today is a full-day game drive, as we spend the bulk of the day in the Savuti Game Reserve in search of the wildlife that roams the plains. Prepare for bumpy roads as we traverse this wilderness area in our 4x4 vehicles. We hope to see as many species of wildlife and plants as possible, as the habitats range from wetlands to open waters and grassland and savanna woodlands. Today’s journey from Khwai to Nata takes us past the Botswana salt pans. We pack up our camp and leave at dawn in open 4x4 safari vehicles before meeting up with our overland truck in Maun. The scenic drive from Maun to Nata showcases some of Botswana’s stunning landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Keep your eyes open as there is always a chance to spot a wildlife or two before we reach our overnight destination in Nata. This morning we cross the border into Uganda and make our way to Jinja. Jinja is Uganda’s second largest city and is best known as the place where the Nile (officially the Victoria Nile) flows out of Lake Victoria to begin its 6,695-kilometer journey to Egypt and the Mediterranean. After a short stop in Kampala, we drive towards Murchison Falls National Park. The Murchison Falls, also known as Kabaraga Falls, are a waterfall on the course of the great Nile and are located in Murchison National Park. The park is regarded as one of the best national parks in Uganda. After settling into our accommodation in Masindi, our guide will inform us of the activities for the next day. Budongo Forest is the largest mahogany forest in East Africa and is home to the largest number of chimpanzees in Uganda. It is estimated that there are between 600 and 700 chimpanzees in Budongo. This morning, we meet with our chimpanzee guide who will accompany us on our trek through the forest in search of the chimpanzees. We will also take a boat ride through the park. Note: As the chimpanzee trekking is limited to 12 guests per trekking, the trekking will be split into morning and afternoon sessions for more than 12 guests. After crossing the equator again, we travel south towards the beautiful landscape of Lake Bunyonyi. With great anticipation, we prepare for the upcoming gorilla trekking and will receive a briefing on what to expect this evening. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The mountain gorilla is critically endangered, and although exact numbers fluctuate, it is generally believed that there are only about 650 individuals left. A visit with the gorillas is a wonderful opportunity to support their future on Earth, as the money generated from the permits is used for their protection. An extremely important part of the future protection of the remaining gorillas lies in community development – as local communities change their attitudes towards wildlife and start protecting them instead of poaching, the future of mountain gorillas is secured. Since the permits for visiting the gorillas are extremely limited, we must be flexible both with the itinerary and the selection of the place we visit the gorillas. The home of the mountain gorillas knows no man-made boundaries, extending across Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Whenever possible, we utilize the national park in Uganda, but that depends on permit availability. Should we not get permits for visiting the mountain gorillas in Uganda, we will inform all passengers in advance that the tour will go to Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of Congo. On your free day in Bunyonyi, you have the option to partake in some optional activities. You can also go hiking or explore the area by mountain bike. We leave the beautiful Lake Bunyonyi and head to another stunning body of water in Uganda – Lake Mburo. Lake Mburo is located in the Ankole region of Uganda, near the city of Mbarara, and stretches over an area of approximately 260 square kilometers, surrounded by gentle hills, open grasslands, and woodland patches. With over 350 registered bird species, Lake Mburo National Park is a paradise for bird watchers. The park's diverse ecosystems, which include acacia forests, savannas, and wetlands, provide excellent habitat for numerous bird species, including the rare and oddly aquatic shoebill stork. This morning we leave the Ankole region and make our way back to Jinja. Jinja offers many exciting optional activities around the Nile, including rafting, kayaking, and a variety of cruises on Africa’s largest river. Those less interested in water sports can go horseback riding or experience a quad adventure.
